Nonogram strategies: a logic-first workflow

Strong Nonogram play is a repeatable cycle: choose the most constrained line, place only certain cells, and propagate those facts across the grid. The goal is steady information gain without guessing or using the emerging picture as evidence.

Start with high-information lines

Prioritize clues that nearly fill their available space, because their earliest and latest placements overlap. Full lines and tightly packed multi-run clues create anchors that constrain several crossing lines at once.

Close every completed run

When a filled block reaches a clue length, mark the cells immediately beside it empty whenever the line candidates require that boundary. Those empty cells split the line and prevent a finished run from absorbing later fills.

Propagate before scanning elsewhere

After each certain cell, inspect its perpendicular line and update the legal space for every remaining run. Several short deductions chained across directions are safer and faster than repeatedly scanning the entire board.

Recover from a stalled board

Recount clue lengths, mandatory gaps and unresolved intervals; then check whether completed runs were closed on both sides. If no forced move remains, use a logic-only hint that names a provable line or cell rather than guessing.
